Star Route

In this itinerary we propose a trip inspired by how we discovered Kenya for the first time, to delve into a more remote version of the country, one that many travelers overlook by focusing only on the best-known parks.

This route combines 4x4 safaris, boat safaris and nature walks to create a journey where landscapes are constantly changing, and places like Maji Moto bring us closer to the heart of the Maasai people, bringing a deeper cultural dimension.

What makes it different? We designed a route that goes beyond the Maasai Mara, following that first route that led us to discover less explored regions such as Samburu and rhino conservation projects such as Ol Pejeta, along with some of the great icons of the country.

Your detailed safari itinerary

Arrival in Nairobi

Novotel Westlands Hotel (BB)
Lunch and dinner

A Watatu representative will meet you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (between 7 and 9 AM). From there, once everyone has gathered, we will head to the hotel located in Nairobi city. This first day is designed for you to settle in comfortably, rest from your journey, and start to feel the pulse of Kenya.

Heading to Samburu: First Safari in Remote Kenya

Samburu Sopa Lodge
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Let's begin! We start our adventure by leaving Nairobi city behind and heading to Samburu National Reserve. We will cross the central highlands, coffee and tea plantations, and local villages that showcase the most rural Kenya. After a journey of about 5 hours, Samburu awaits us, a more arid landscape dominated by the Ewaso Nyiro River and home to unique species such as Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, oryx, and gerenuk. Here we will have our first safari.

Full Safari in Samburu: Felines and the “Special Five”

Samburu Soup Lodge
Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We will tour the national park in search of felines and the so-called “Five Specials” of Samburu, a full day to understand why Samburu is one of the most authentic places in the country. We will get up early to take advantage of the best safari hours that we will divide into two departures: one from 6 to 12 in the morning and another from 16 to 18 in the afternoon, the hours in which the animals are most active. Between both departures we will rest and have lunch at the accommodation.

From Samburu to Ol Pejeta: safari and conservation

Sweetwaters Serena Cam
Breakfast, lunch and dinner

After breakfast, we will say goodbye to Samburu with a safari en route and head towards Ol Pejeta. This area is a world reference in the conservation and protection of wildlife. Upon arrival in the middle of the morning, we will begin the safari, famous for hosting one of the largest populations of white and black rhinos in Africa. After a hot lunch at the accommodation, in the afternoon we will continue our safari in search of elephants, lions and antelopes.

Lake Naivasha and Crescent Island: Boat and Walking Safari

Naivasha Kongoni Lodge
Breakfast, lunch and dinner

After a morning safari to leave Ol Pejeta, today we travel to Lake Naivasha (approx. 5 h). Upon arrival at the accommodation in Naivasha, we will have a strong lunch and then go on a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, sailing among hippos and an incredible variety of birds, with the fishing eagles as protagonists. The experience continues on Crescent Island, the paradise of Naivasha. We will spend the afternoon on this secluded and unique island, where we will do a walking safari, walking freely among giraffes, wildebeests, zebras and water antelopes in a safe environment, a very special way to connect with African nature.

Maasai culture in the hills of Loita

Hot Water Eco Camp
Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Early in the morning, we will start the route south, in the direction of Maji Moto. Once we arrive, we will stay in our camp at the top of the Loita hills, with endless views of the Maasai plains. In the afternoon, guided by our Maasai guide, we will take a walk through nature and learn their ancestral knowledge about medicinal plants and animal footprints. At the end of the tour, we will reach the center of the village of Maji Moto, where the hot springs that give life and supply the community spring. We will return to the accommodation to watch the sunset and enjoy a training demonstration of Maasai warriors. We end the day sitting by the fire to listen to the stories and ancestral songs that connect us with the essence of this wild land.

Masai Mara: the most famous reserve in the world

Mara Sopa Lodge
Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner

After breakfast we will head to the mythical Maasai Mara. Upon entering the reserve, the savannah will open before us, we will be in one of the best places on the planet to observe the big five. During the morning we will look for big cats and herbivores, and at noon we will head to the accommodation located in the heart of the park for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, we will leave the safari again, from 15:30 to 18:00 h, to explore this golden immensity, where every bend of the road can hide an unforgettable scene.

Masai Mara: Legendary Full-Day Safari

Lady Sopa Lodg
Breakfast, lunch and dinner

We have waited for it, we have heard it and it has finally arrived: the most famous safari in the world. At 6:00 in the morning we will go on safari, just at the time when the wildlife is most awake. For hours we will walk through this legendary scenario, following trails, reading the terrain with our guides and looking for the animals, the main protagonists. We will return to the accommodation for lunch and in the afternoon, when the sun sets again and the savannah regains its golden magic, we will go out again. It's the moment when predators reactivate, the perfect closure for a day that will be etched forever.

Farewell to Africa: Return to Nairobi

No accommodation
Breakfast and picnic lunch

And so, the journey is drawing to a close. A trip that, like it did for us, will surely leave a lasting impression on you. After several intense days, today we'll start the day in a more relaxed way. Following our last breakfast in the heart of the savanna, we'll bid farewell to the Masai Mara and begin our road journey back to Nairobi. And though it may seem incredible, the adventure is concluding. Depending on your international flight schedule, optional activities in the city or the use of a day room can be arranged before your transfer to Jomo Kenyatta Airport (flights must depart in the afternoon from 5 PM onwards).
