The Breeding of the Great Migration

The most special time to go on safari in Tanzania: when the great migration and the rest of the wild fauna have their young.

A phenomenon that takes place in the first months of the year, between January and April. The great migration is located in the south of the Serengeti, where the vegetation is very green thanks to the rains that have fallen weeks before.

We will make a circular route where we will get to know the remote area of Lake Natron with the Maasai settlement, the exciting Serengeti National Park (center and south) and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Ndutu and the crater)

An 8-day journey where thousands of nyus and zebras give birth to the next generation. In addition, it is also a time of year with less influx of visitors.

Your detailed safari itinerary

Arrival in Tanzania

Lodge in Arusha
Local lunch and dinner

Kilimanjaro airport pickup by a Watatu Travel representative (between 7 and 9 AM) and transfer to your accommodation (approx. 1h 30m). At midday, we will have lunch in a local community where the mamas will cook us traditional food such as pilau rice, various types of soup, fresh vegetables, assorted fruit, and BBQ meat. This way, we'll have direct contact with the local people and get to know the rest of the group.

En route to Lake Natron

Tented Camp in the area of Lake Natron
Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner

We will start our adventure leaving behind the city of Arusha and heading to one of the places that has marked us the most: Lake Natron (6-7 h approx.). To get there we will cross volcanic landscapes, traditional villages and areas with wild fauna such as giraffes, nymphs and antelopes. As we advance, the landscape will become more untamed, until we see on the horizon the Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai. Once we arrive, we will leave our bags at the lodge and our Maasai guide will take us to the “secret rock”. There, in front of the lake and surrounded by animals, we will experience a spectacular sunset.

Natron Lake Activity Day: Maasai Culture

Tented Camp in the area of Lake Natron
Breakfast, lunch and dinner

With our Maasai guide we will explore the area to see the largest colony of flamingos in Africa. Among the Maasai stories of past centuries, we will discover the waterfalls of the area and the fauna that inhabits it: giraffes, wildebeests and zebras are usual suspects. In the afternoon, we will carry out the activity “Jewels of the Maasai Land”: a workshop taught by Maasai women in which we will learn their ancestral jewelry techniques. With their help, we will create our own jewel — a memory for a lifetime. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge to relax, enjoy a swim in the pool and once again marvel at another unforgettable sunset.

En route to the Serengeti via Klein's Gate and afternoon safari

Tented Camp in the central Serengeti (Seronera)
Breakfast, picnic lunch, and dinner

This will be an unforgettable day. Early in the morning, we will leave Lake Natron behind and head towards Serengeti National Park (5h). After crossing the remote lands of Loliondo, we will arrive at Klein's Gate and finally enter the park for our first safari. From north to south, we will admire the beauty of the African savanna and look for our first big cats. In the evening, we will arrive at our lodge, located in the heart of the Serengeti, have dinner, and gather around the fire to listen to the sounds of the savanna. It's not uncommon to hear elephants, lions, and other animals. A unique nocturnal spectacle not to be missed.

Full day safari in the Serengeti

Tented Camp in the heart of the Serengeti (Seronera)
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Today we'll spend the entire day on the "Best safari in the world". Throughout the day, we'll discover the vast array of birds, reptiles, and mammals that inhabit the park: wildebeest, zebras, and various antelope species. With the help of our guides, we'll learn to track the planet's most famous felines: lions, cheetahs, and leopards. It will be an incredible day, divided into two outings: one from 6 AM to 12 PM and another from 4 PM to 6 PM, which are the times when the animals are most active. Between these two outings, we'll rest and have lunch at the lodge.

Safari in Ndutu, southern Serengeti

Tented Camp in Ndutu
Breakfast, picnic lunch, and dinner

Early in the morning, we will begin a game drive towards the southern Serengeti. We will leave the Serengeti and arrive at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to witness with our own eyes “The Miracle of Ndutu”: thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and impalas await us, giving birth to their young. With the birth of the young, we will be able to observe predators lying in wait, a natural spectacle unique on the planet. We will spend the night at a mobile camp in Ndutu, surrounded by thousands of animals.

Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Lodge in Karatu
Breakfast, picnic lunch, and dinner

Early in the morning, we will embark on a safari to the Ngorongoro Crater. Along the way, we'll traverse breathtaking landscapes and have new opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Around midday (12:00 PM-1:00 PM), we will descend 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater to experience this unique ecosystem, considered one of the world's best wildlife reserves. Although it may seem impossible, it is precisely here that we can spot the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino). We will then exit the Conservation Area and spend the night at our lodge, surrounded by spectacular scenery.

Plantations in Mto Wa Mbu and transfer to the airport

No accommodation
Breakfast and picnic lunch

After several intense days, today we'll start the day in a more relaxed way. We'll have breakfast and participate in the "Land of Farmers" activity. In Mto Wa Mbu, we'll have the opportunity to explore the area's banana plantations. We'll sample the regional cuisine and understand the importance of this crop for the farmers and the local economy. And though it's hard to believe, the adventure is coming to an end. We will transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport.

The best ofTanzania

The Serengeti National Park is one of the largest and most important parks in Africa, with an area of approximately 30,000 km2. It has a wide variety of ecosystems, from endless plains to hills and scattered forests, which makes it a very diverse habitat to host a lot of wildlife. It is famous for being the scene of the great annual migration, where millions of nyus and zebras roam the Serengeti in search of fresh pastures and rains.

Tarangire is one of the most important National Parks in northern Tanzania, known for its large elephant population and diverse fauna. The park is characterized by its centuries-old baobabs, seasonal swamps and the Tarangire River, which attracts a wide variety of animals during the dry season as it is of perennial water (there is always water).

Lake Natron is a place of incredible natural beauty, with waters of a vibrant red due to its high concentration of salt and microorganisms, which reflect the sky at sunset. It is a sanctuary for flamingos, who gather on its shores to nest and feed. In this remote area, away from tourism, you can get to know the Maasai culture in the nearby settlements and enjoy the surreal views of the active Ol Donyo Lengai volcano and the Rift Valley.

Ndutu is located just south of the Serengeti and becomes a vibrant scene during the Great Migration, especially during the first months of the year, where thousands of herbivores have their young and feed on green, fresh pastures.
